NCS students shine at the Frankly Speaking Debating Competition

NCS students shine at the Frankly Speaking Debating Competition

After beating Eton at the LSE debating competition, our NCS team set their sights on winning the prestigious Frankly Speaking Debating Competition which was held at the palatial Bloomberg offices in London.

Our committed and talented duo Iram Farooqui and Abdullah Raja put all their training to the test and saw off many independent and Grammar schools to come first place and win the competition in their first outing.

Topping this already impressive achievement, Iram Farooqui won first place for best individual performance and Abdullah was awarded runner up. As the recipient of the best individual performance prize, Iram will now have an opportunity to spend three weeks in the USA as part of the Benjamin Franklin Summer Programme.

Their teacher and debating coach, Mr Singh, said of their accomplishment:

“Both Iram and Abdullah showed exceptional critical skill in creating their own and dismantling their opponents’ arguments, and delivered their speeches with verve and wit. I hope to see their hard-earned success inspire other students in the NCS Debating Club!”

Everyone at The NCS would like to congratulate Iram and Abdullah on this outstanding accomplishment.

The student view
``The debates involved lively discussions, with many passionate appeals from all sides. It came as a pleasant surprise to be announced as the team winners - it was even more surprising to be awarded the individual winner title, the prize of this being a month-long summer school in the USA as part of the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows Summer Institute for Youth. This programme entails UK-US youth cooperation and will provide indispensable insight into American politics and culture. I am so grateful for this opportunity.`` - Iram
``Even though it was my first time debating, I felt prepared and confident in my abilities because of the immense support and guidance Mr Singh provided. The motions were; ’This house would maintain open borders to EU citizens after Britain has left the EU’ and ‘This house believes that all police officers should be armed with guns’. Once we passed these two, we got into the semi final debating for an increase in income tax to support the NHS and on the subject of ‘Human Rights - the right to vote’. Each debate was invigorating, providing a greater insight into the issues that we face in society; it was an honour to be an ambassador for the NCS.`` - Abdullah
